If you already have a three way switch and want to use the caseta smart light switch dimmers you can just wire the circuit so that only one switch in the 3 way circuit is controlling the on/off function of the lights and on the other side of the circuit you will remove the old switch and cap or connect the wires as needed in the junction box and install the caseta pico remote where the old switch was and it will look identical to the fully wired smart light switch on the other side of the circuit. This means that you can turn any switch into a three way switch even without rewiring the switch because you can just mount the pico remote on the wall and connect it to the hub and it will enable three way switch functionality through programming in the hub. The caseta dimmers also work with caseta pico remotes which are actually battery powered but look the exact same as normal light switches. The caseta dimmers don’t require a neutral wire which can be very helpful if you are trying to rewire an older house which oftentimes don’t have neutral wires in the switch boxes. The caseta smart light switch dimmers do offer two unique features not offered by many other smart light switches. The lutron caseta smart dimmers also work with both Amazon Alexa and Google Home. The hub then connects to your router and can be controlled via wifi though the app for in home or remote control. The caseta smart light switch dimmers all connect to a central hub that can then control any other caseta smart light switches that you add to the system. The Lutron Caseta smart light switch dimming kit offers everything you need make your three way switch smart. (You must also purchase the matching smart dimmer remote listed below for the switch to have 3 way functionality.) It’s important to take a picture of the existing wiring before you pull of the old switch so you can identify the wiring for the new switch, it also doesn’t hurt to mark the wires so you know which goes where on the new switches. If the remote is not working most likely it’s possible that traveler wire and load wire were connected backwards, it’s typically an easy fix just take out the switch and switch the load and traveler wires. The light switches were easy to wire up, without issue, they use a neutral, hot, load and traveler wire to work together. The 3 way smart light switch functionality requires that you purchase both the standard leviton dimming wifi light switch and a matching paired smart wifi dimming remote as they call it. Once you have the smart light switch dimmers connected you can control them through the phone app at home or remotely with just a swipe of the app on your phone. A 3-way dimmer is a switch with three wires that control the brightness of lights simultaneously within the same 3-way circuit typically found in hallways, stairwells, and spaces with two entrances. The leviton app is simple to use and connecting the lights switches to the app is easy, just make sure you follow the instructions to put the light switches into pairing mode when trying to connect to the app. These 3 way smart light switch dimmers connect to standard home wifi networks from your cell phone and don’t require any kind of smart home hub. They have worked flawlessly for years without any issues and I have them connected to both Amazon Alexa and Google Home for voice control.

The following script achieves the result. For this, we also take the help of the peek function discussed in the earlier chapter to hold the value of the previous record and add it to the sales volume of the current record. With the above data loaded into QlikView’s memory, we edit the script to add a new column, which will give a rolling sum of the month wise sales volume. (txt, codepage is 1252, embedded labels, delimiter is ',', msq) Applying RangeSum() Function Click OK and click Control+R to load the data into QlikView’s memory. Edit the load script to add the following code. Choose the Table Files option from the Data from Files tab and browse for the file containing the above data. Open the Script editor from the File menu or press Control+E. The above data is loaded to QlikView memory by using the script editor. It can take expressions containing other functions as its arguments and return the sum of those expressions. The RangeSum() function in QlikView is used to do a selective sum on chosen fields which is not easily achieved by the sum function. Clicking OK displays the data from the CSV file in the QlikView Table Box as shown below. The following window appears in which we mention the Title of the table and select the required fields to be displayed. Go to the menu item Layout → New Sheet Object → Table Box. Let us create a Table Box sheet object to show the data generated by the above script. (txt, codepage is 1252, embedded labels, delimiter is ‘,’, msq) ((-peek(‘Sales Volume’)))/peek(‘Sales Volume’)*100 as Difference The following script achieves this result. Let us display the percentage change for sales volume for each month. The peek() can be used in calculations involving other columns. On completing the above steps and clicking Finish, we get the Table box showing the data as given below. Also set the sort order as shown below to get the result in the same order of the field Month as it is in the source. Clicking OK displays the data from the csv file in the QlikView Table Box as shown below. (txt, codepage is 1252, embedded labels, delimiter is ',', msq) Creating Sheet Object Choose the Table Files option from for the file containing the above data. Save the data with file name monthly_sales.csv. Let us consider the monthly sales figure as shown below. It's mostly for larger rack-mount systems.Ĭlosest model I can see that is included would be the FS1018 - but this is SSD only. Synology do offer an advanced replacement service named Synology Replacement Service (SRS) but it's not available for that model in the USA. Or they might have other work staff could do for a few days in an emergency so it's no big deal. But they might be cheap and willing to take the risk. 12 staff unable to do their job for 3-4 days could loose them 10x more than the additional cost of a server. So you need to determine if the extra cost is worthwhile to your client. If they go for a full Windows server from Dell, HP etc you have options such as NDB or 4-hour reponse, with an engineer coming on-site to perform the repair. I would also expect the replacement to be returned at factory defaults, so you have to configure everything again. So I would expect a minimum 3-4 business days before you have a working replacement. The standard RMA process is to send the unit back to Synology before they will send out a replacement. Lets say this NAS fails in 8 months time. Something you may not have considered is support. One downfall would obviously be losing folder redirection but I think the real-time backup could cover that.Īfter that I can't really think of any downsides to just moving them to a NAS. A NAS is perfect for the type of data they are using as long as they go with cloud accounting. My thoughts are the Synology will provide us with a much more storage at a much better cost than a windows server and super easy remote access support. Instead of folder redirection setup the cloud station and setup the real-time workstation backup.įor cloud backup go with something like Amazon Glacier, for onsite backup just backup to a couple of large externals for the first few years then we may have to build another backup NAS if their data starts approaching 10TB+. Enabling Quickconnect for easy outside access to files, enabling the VPN functionality for people that want to do it that way. Dropping total capacity doesn't save more than a few hundred so I don't see the point because going to a smaller NAS drops the M2D18 card from NVme to SATA SSD or drops the M2D18 altogether.įor remote access. This is obviously way overkill but it will provide them with enough guaranteed fast onsite storage for the next 5+ years and there is plenty of budget for it. Total cost is about $2500 and I can see a windows server EASILY costing double maybe triple. Also including the add-on PCI-e card (M2D18 ) which allows for NVme drives (2x500GB 970 Evo's) as R/W Cache and also bumping up the internal memory to 32GB. I'm thinking of going with a 8Bay Synology NAS ( ) with a total storage of 28TB in SHR. In the future they will need some better options for remote access because they currently use LogMeIn. Their data is primarily documents, spreadsheets, pictures, and PDF's. If they do choose to goto this fully cloud based solution then I am thinking they have zero need for a windows server. They are considering moving to a full cloud based solution for accounting before any hardware decisions are made. Other than that I do have it setup for folder redirection which is one of the reasons why storage is an issue with some employees storing 100GB+ of personal pictures etc. The ONLY reason they need a windows server is because their main accounting software is Sage and it requires a Windows server to run (SQL). Tl dr After emptying a folder on the host NAS, the client PC started emptying that same sync folder, despite being configured to download data only.I have a client who works in construction and they currently have a 5 year old windows server running 2012R2 with about 1TB of total storage in a RAID10 that is approaching it's storage capacity so we're starting to talk about the future. Has anyone experienced this? How have I gone about this wrong? I freaked out and paused the backup, but I can confirm if I unpause it, they start getting wiped again. However, when I moved my files out of that sync folder on the NAS, it started going through and deleting them off the PC! This is exactly the opposite of what the "Download data from Synology Drive Sever" is supposed to do! I have it set up to download data from the NAS only - see config image. I mirror that sync folder to a PC, which is supposed to just accumulate all the files that ever go through that folder. Part of my annual archive is to move all the files in one of the folders ("Sync Folder") in the NAS to a new directory, so that the sync folder doesn't get too cluttered. I use synology drive on the NAS and the client application on a windows PC. I've been going through my annual archival process, which does involve a little bit of manual re-arranging of files and folders. Let’s see how good it is: Just one less! And that’s the pattern we were hinting at: it’s been working like that every time. In fact, right now a calculator is starting to look really good. So, let’s average 577/408 and 2/(577/408):ĭo you remember what 577 times 577 is? Heh, neither do we. Besides, it’ll be fun to beat the Babylonians at their own game and get a better approximation to. Which is what the Babylonians seem to have used!ĭo you see the cute pattern? No? Yes? Even if you do, it’s good to try another round of this game, to see if this pattern persists. Do you remember what 12 times 24 is? Well, maybe you remember that 12 times 12 is 144. Now we’ll average 17/12 and 2/(17/12):ĭo you remember what 17 times 17 is? No? That’s bad. First, we want to prove that we’re just as good at arithmetic as the ancient Babylonians: we don’t need a calculator for this stuff! Second, a cute pattern will show up if you pay attention. We’re doing the calculation in painstaking detail for two reasons. Now 1 sure isn’t equal to 2/1, but we can average them and get a better guess: We start with an obvious dumb guess, namely 1. In fact it converges very rapidly: at each step, the number of correct digits in your guess will approximately double! If your original guess wasn’t too bad, and you keep using this procedure, you’ll get a sequence of guesses that converges to. So it makes sense to take the average of and, and use that as a new guess. If your guess is exactly right thenīut if your guess isn’t right, won’t be quite equal to. Suppose you’re trying to compute the square root of 2 and you have a guess, say. So, Indian mathematicians may have known the same algorithm.īut what is this algorithm, exactly? Joseph describes it, but Sridhar Ramesh told us about an easier way to think about it. The number 577/408 also shows up as an approximation to in the Shulba Sutras, a collection of Indian texts compiled between 800 and 200 BC. In his book The Crest of the Peacock, George Gheverghese Joseph points out that a number very much like this shows up at the fourth stage of a fairly obvious recursive algorithm for approximating square roots! The first three approximations areīut if you work it out to 3 places in base 60, as the Babylonians seem to have done, you’ll get the number on this tablet! … even if it were only due to our incomplete knowledge of the sources that we assume that the Babylonians did not know that had no solution in integer numbers and, even then the fact remains that the consequences of this result were never realized.īut there is evidence that the Babylonians knew their figure was just an approximation. One of the great experts on Babylonian mathematics, Otto Neugebauer, wrote: There seems to be no evidence that they knew about irrational numbers. This is an impressively good approximation toīut how did they get this approximation? Did they know it was just an approximation? And did they know is irrational? But let’s get back to our original question: what did they know about ? So, we know from tables of reciprocals that Babylonians wrote 1/2 as 30. This is cool, because modern algebra also sees reciprocals as logically preceding division, even if most non-mathematicians disagree! To calculate they would break up into factors, look up the reciprocal of each, and take the product of these together with. They even checked their answers the obvious way: by taking the reciprocal of the reciprocal! They put together tables of reciprocals and used these to tackle more general division problems. According to Jöran Friberg’s book A Remarkable Collection of Babylonian Mathematical Texts, there are tablets where a teacher has set some unfortunate student the task of inverting some truly gigantic numbers such as 3 25 How do we know the Babylonians wrote 1/2 as 30? One reason is that they really liked reciprocals. Once you start worrying about these things, there’s no end to it. And for a beginner, or indeed any mathematician, it makes a lot of sense to take 1/2 and multiply it by to get. But this tablet was probably written by a beginner, since the writing is large. So maybe the square’s side has length 1/2… but maybe it has length 30. I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to give my credit card information to a company that uses such a sleazy technique to try and lure me in. Ignore any streams with titles like “FuLl MoViE AvAiLaBlE HeRe!!!!” These are come-ons to get you to go their websites, which usually require you to enter your credit card information. Be advised, however, that often these streams are often illegally uploaded and won’t be up for long. Sometimes you can find films you’re looking for on streaming services such as YouTube, Vimeo, and Veoh. There are a few companies that sell German DVDs through Amazon and ship to the United States on a regular basis, and a few companies stateside (also on Amazon) that sell East German films, but I think you’ll find their prices higher and often neutralize the advantage of buying from them. There are a few vendors that sell from Germany, but the shipping can be costly and you might have to wait a month or more for the package to arrive. The second best source for DVDs is-surprise, surprise-Germany. Their subtitles are already better than anything you are likely to come up with. So, without further palaver, let’s begin! Film SourcesĪs already mentioned, the best source for East German films in America is The DEFA Library, but these films don’t need subtitles added. You can respond to this post in the comments below. If you use a Mac, and have done this kind of work, I’d love to hear your recommendations. The subtitle editor Jubler is available for both platforms, but, the last time I looked Jubler was missing a few features that I will be discussing. I know VLC Player is available for both Macs and PCs, and is recommended for both. One quick caveat, however: I use a PC, so all of the programs I describe in detail are made for that platform. Happily, there are some excellent programs out there that can make the process easier. The answer is, yes, but it means some work. The East German films distributed by the DEFA Library at UMass Amherst have excellent English subtitles, and I will always recommend them as your primary source for East German films, but what about those films you want to see that aren’t available with English subtitles? Is there a workaround? Even if you can follow German films without too much difficulty, it’s nice to have English subtitles. Others, such as the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens, have little trains that take you on safari-style tours through the zoo, giving you a chance to both rest and get new and interesting vantage points to view the animals. Some zoos, such as Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, have dark, cave-like tunnels guests can enter and watch manatees floating through their habitat and eating lettuce in underwater viewing areas. Or, visit one of the air-conditioned indoor exhibits for reptiles, insects and underwater creatures. One hot days, several Florida zoos have water misters throughout the grounds for both animals and humans, and some have cool-down zones that include splash pools and sprinkler water parks. And many have petting zoos, perfect for little ones who like to put their hands on fuzzy goats, ponies, pigs and other tame and kid-friendly animals. Some zoos offer its guests guided kayak tours that bring you as close as possible to native birds, plants and fish without having to venture into the wild on your own. Look for posted feeding times and daily educational programs to get more out of your visit, and be sure to stop by the various touch pools filled with stingrays, small sharks and other water life. Most have wildlife conservation components that are both educational and effective in protecting threatened and endangered animals around the world, and all offer shows, field trips visits and other hands-on events. Zoos in Florida are truly interactive experiences, filled with fun encounters with native species, such as manatees and alligators, as well as not-native animals such as giraffes, elephants, penguins and zebras. One great way to take advantage of Florida’s beautiful weather is by spending a day at one of the state’s many globally recognized and accredited zoos and wildlife sanctuaries. |
